The automotive landscape is shifting, and Volkswagen Group, despite its massive scale, is navigating a period of significant uncertainty. Factors like ongoing industry supply chain issues, a cooling market in China, and Porsche’s ambitious, and perhaps overzealous, pivot towards electrification have created a complex situation for the German giant.
Porsche embarked on a bold strategy a few years back, aiming to electrify nearly its entire model lineup, with the exception of the legendary 911. This transition has already seen the Macan crossover and the Cayenne become available in all-electric variants, with an electric 718 also on the horizon. However, this aggressive electrification push has coincided with an unexpected resurgence of interest in internal combustion engines (ICE) in markets like America, alongside economic headwinds in China.
This market recalibration has led Porsche to reconsider its decisions. While the company is moving forward with the Cayenne Electric, it has also decided to continue offering a gasoline-powered Cayenne alongside its electric counterpart. Similarly, the 718 series is reportedly being developed to accommodate both electric and ICE powertrains, allowing for a more flexible future.
The original gasoline-powered Macan, however, met an untimely end after a brief period of being sold alongside the second-generation electric Macan. This left a void in Porsche’s lineup for customers who still prefer traditional powertrains. To address this, Porsche is believed to be working on a successor, internally codenamed ‘Project Octan.’ Recent spy shots of an Audi Q5 test mule have fueled speculation that this prototype is actually a development vehicle for this new ICE-powered Macan heir.
While the electric Macan and Cayenne share the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture with their Audi counterparts (Q6 e-tron and A6 e-tron), the upcoming Octan is expected to utilize the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC). This platform is anticipated to underpin the third-generation Audi Q5 and Q5 Sportback. In terms of performance, the Porsche Octan is likely to align with the sporty aspirations of models like the SQ5 and the forthcoming RS Q5, suggesting potent engine options.
The rapid appearance of test mules hints at a potentially accelerated development cycle. Porsche may be aiming for a 2028 model year release to recapture customers who have been displaced by the discontinuation of the ICE Macan. This has understandably drawn significant attention from automotive enthusiasts and digital artists alike.
Among those envisioning the future of Porsche’s ICE offerings is virtual artist Andrei Avarvarii of Avarvarii Automotive Artworks. He has produced a hypothetical rendering of the Octan, blending Porsche’s latest design language, as seen on the electric Macan and Cayenne, with styling cues suited for a coupe-SUV body. Avarvarii’s interpretation features a revised front bumper with a gilded air intake, traditional LED headlights instead of the split design, and quad exhaust tips integrated into the rear bumper and diffuser assembly.
