The 2026 Lexus IS has demonstrated a strong commitment to occupant safety with its array of advanced active safety features, earning high marks in several key areas during recent crash testing. However, the luxury sedan’s performance in certain impact scenarios, particularly for rear occupants and during side collisions, presents a mixed picture.

Lexus has made specific adjustments for the 2026 model year, notably modifying the driver seatbelt load limiter. This enhancement proved effective in moderate overlap frontal impacts, with crash test dummy data indicating a minimal risk of injury for the driver. The integrity of the passenger cell also held up well, remaining within acceptable safety parameters, although some structural intrusion was noted in the footwell area.

The evaluation took a different turn when assessing rear passenger safety. Restraint kinematics and head/neck injury metrics for those in the back seat were rated “acceptable.” However, chest protection for rear occupants scored a less favorable “marginal” rating. During the frontal impact simulation, the rear dummy exhibited aggressive forward movement, bringing its head perilously close to the front seatbacks.

Side impact performance also yielded mixed results. The overall rating for side impact was deemed “acceptable,” but specific components like the structure and safety cage received a “marginal” rating. The B-pillar showed notable deformation, intruding significantly towards the driver’s seat centerline. While pelvic injury measures for rear occupants dropped to “marginal,” they actually fared better in the 37 mph (60 km/h) side impact test compared to other rear safety metrics.

Beyond crashworthiness, the 2026 IS impressed with its standard safety equipment. The LED projector headlamps earned a “good” rating from the IIHS, providing excellent visibility on various road conditions without causing glare. Interestingly, the optional triple-beam LED headlights received an “acceptable” rating, with some shortcomings noted in low-beam illumination on certain curves and high-beam reach.

Interior safety systems also performed admirably. The seatbelt reminders achieved a “good” rating for their audible alerts, ensuring occupants are prompted to buckle up even against typical background noise. Furthermore, the LATCH child seat anchor system received top marks, with easily accessible lower anchors on the outer rear seats and ample clearance.

The 2026 Lexus IS continues to be built on the Toyota New N platform, sharing its underpinnings with models like the GS and RC. For prospective buyers, the IS is available starting at $46,895. The United States market offers six distinct trims, ranging from the 350 F Sport Design to the more premium F Sport Special Appearance Package. Opting for all-wheel drive will add $2,000 to the vehicle’s price. All models are powered by a 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6 engine that delivers 311 horsepower.
