Back in 2020, a novel camping solution emerged, born from a collaboration between the UK and Hungary. This innovative product, known as the Maverick, was a flatpack camping pod designed to offer a simple, sheltered space for outdoor enthusiasts. While the company behind it, Cube Modular, seems to have moved on, the memory of this intriguing glamping pod remains, prompting a look back at its unique appeal and potential.

The Maverick was a product of Campsule and Caboose, two entities that partnered to bring this concept to life. However, a check of current manufacturer domains reveals no trace of the Maverick being available for purchase. The original websites appear to be defunct, with only lingering social media presences on Instagram and Facebook offering a visual record of the pod as it once was. This sudden disappearance leaves us wondering about its fate and the potential for its return.

Despite its current unavailability, the Maverick’s design warrants a closer look. Constructed from a clever combination of GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) panels sandwiching XPS foam, the pod boasted six sturdy walls. The floor was notably reinforced to comfortably support the weight of two occupants. These walls were then integrated with aluminum stilts, which served a dual purpose: elevating the pod off the ground and acting as integral supports for the sidewalls, ensuring a robust structure.

Inside, the Maverick offered a modest 33 square feet (3.1 square meters) of floor space. This compact area was designed to accommodate two sleeping bags and a small amount of clothing, emphasizing its no-frills approach. It’s important to note that the Maverick was not equipped with any internal lighting or plumbing, aligning with its minimalist ethos. This barebones setup, however, doesn’t diminish its potential applicability. For campers who prioritize a basic shelter for resting and are content with utilizing existing campsite amenities, the Maverick could have been an ideal solution.

The Maverick could also be envisioned as an auxiliary space on camping trips, providing a private nook for individuals or children, or even as an additional enclosure positioned alongside a larger RV or camper. The simplicity of its construction suggests that it might even inspire DIY enthusiasts to recreate or improve upon the design. Its original price point of approximately £3,000 (around $4,000 USD in 2023) made it a relatively accessible option for those seeking a unique camping experience.

We are currently awaiting a response from Cube Modular to understand the circumstances surrounding the Maverick’s discontinuation. The hope remains that this ingenious flatpack camping pod might one day make a comeback, perhaps even with production rights extending to new markets. Until then, we can only appreciate the innovative spirit that brought the Maverick to life and imagine the possibilities it offered.
