The automotive world is buzzing with the unveiling of the Evolve concept motorhome, a glimpse into the future of recreational vehicles that seamlessly blends cutting-edge electric technology with practical, spacious design. This innovative concept, making its debut at the 2026 Dusseldorf Caravan Salon, is built upon the versatile skateboard chassis from U.S. startup CityFreighter, demonstrating a compelling vision for sustainable and convenient travel.
While not slated for immediate production, the Evolve serves as a powerful testament to what’s achievable in the all-electric RV sector. Developed in collaboration with Vöhringer, Ross Design, and Motive Development, the Evolve concept prioritizes comfort, reliability, convenience, and sustainability, all while promising reduced running costs compared to traditional motorhomes. A key highlight is its impressive real-world electric range.
Powering the Evolve is a substantial 128kWh battery pack, strategically positioned within the chassis for enhanced side-crash protection. This battery fuels a 160kW motor, enabling the motorhome to achieve over 400 kilometers (approximately 248.5 miles) on a single charge. Crucially, CityFreighter emphasizes that this figure is based on actual real-life testing, not simulations, offering a realistic expectation for travelers.
Beyond its immediate capabilities, the Evolve is designed with future adaptability in mind. The modular nature of the CityFreighter platform allows for potential battery upgrades as technology advances, ensuring the motorhome remains a long-term investment. This forward-thinking approach aligns with the sentiment that a motorhome is often a once-in-a-lifetime purchase, one that owners will want to maximize for years to come.
The adoption of the CityFreighter skateboard chassis also unlocks significant interior volume. Inspired by the aerodynamic efficiency of a water droplet, the Evolve features a design that tapers at the front and rear while widening in the central section. Measuring 6.95 meters (22.8 feet) in length, comparable to a standard Fiat Ducato conversion, the Evolve gains an additional 70 to 80 cm (27.5 to 31.5 inches) of interior space. This is achieved by positioning the cabin directly over the front axle and maintaining a low-profile, continuous floor from front to back, creating an expansive living environment.
Inside, the demonstrator showcases a thoughtfully arranged living area. A spacious lounge and dining zone is situated directly behind the cab, featuring face-to-face benches and a flexible, three-fold table that glides on rails. This allows for easy adjustment of the table’s position, even enabling its use within the cabin itself, blurring the lines between driving and living spaces.
The rear of the Evolve houses the sleeping quarters, with a bed positioned on an elevated platform. This clever arrangement creates a substantial pass-through garage underneath, perfect for storing bicycles and other gear. The low floor design further enhances this storage capacity, providing ample room for adventure essentials.
A standout feature is the innovative “stealth” bathroom, cleverly integrated between the refrigerator and the bed. It remains virtually invisible until deployed. By swiveling one wall and sliding another on rails, the shower and sink are revealed, offering a discreet and functional private space.
The Evolve’s interior is finished with attention to detail and material efficiency. Felted walls contribute to improved acoustics and insulation, while a full-length skylight bathes the interior in natural light, balancing the darker felt finishes. Airply furniture is utilized to keep overall weight down, further enhancing efficiency.
The positive reception to the Evolve concept has been significant, with feedback from both the public and media indicating a strong industry readiness for innovative electric RV solutions. This concept motorhome clearly signals that the future of recreational travel is electric, spacious, and surprisingly discreet.
